ARTIST’S STATEMENT

"The idea for these beads grew out of my desire to find a suitable vessel
to hold some of my father’s ashes."
- Josh Kehrberg

Reliquary BeadsAlthough cremation jewelry is not a new concept, the only products I could find on the internet were stamped out, hollow “charms”, devoid of character and produced by the hundreds, each one identical.  Simply put: they weren’t individual enough to honor my father’s memory.
I had been making and teaching lamp work bead making for several years and I’d become proficient  at making hollow beads.  It occurred to me that this was the answer to my quest for a unique and durable vessel for my father’s remains.  I made Reliquary Beads for each of my four siblings and for my Step Mother who takes great comfort in the feeling that my father is still with her.  One of my sisters actually hangs her bead on the tree at Christmas.

Naturally, there are those who are initially uncomfortable with the idea of having someone’s ashes in a bead, but once they see and feel them most people appreciate their very personal and comforting appeal.  I always wear a small bead with my father’s ashes and I never see or feel it that I don’t think fondly of my father.

Although an urn, headstone or crypt may be a fine way to help the world remember a loved ones’ passing, Reliquary Beads are an intimate and personal alternative.  They are a vessel as truly unique as the memory they hold. I am pleased to help people honor their loved ones with indivually created works of art!
